  • +/- 7.000 Danish people live in the Netherlands

  • +/- 9.500 Dutch people live in Danmark

  • 16 students study "Scandinavian Languages & Cultures" (2024) in Amsterdam
  • Only private or individual courses for Dutch in DK(?)
  • Dutch and Danish both derive from Germanic language family

  • Rather liberal mentality (like the Danish)
  • Things are well organised in the country (like the Danish)
  • A lot of work: many people have a job (like in DK)
  • ...
  • Direct in communication
  • but also: rude, loud, children too bold

  • We are too direct: 'He talks like a Dutch uncle' = issueing frank, harsh or severe comments 
  • British people see us as unreliable: ‘If that’s true, then I’m a Dutchman!'
  • Americans think we are really stingy and miserly: 'To go Dutch': splitting the invoice at a restaurant
  • What is a 'Dutch Party'?

Tips for doing business in Denmark
  • Denmark is seen as a very open country in which equality is important 
  • Danish people like humour and irony and dislike showing off
  • So, as a Dutch person, be modest: do not exagerate with academic titles or posh behaviour

Which Dutch words do you already know? All kinds of words are permitted....this is all language!

Dutch words in Danish and Danish words in Dutch
  • In Dutch, we use a few Danish words: smörrebröd, umer and curlingouder (curlingforældre). 
  • Also: 'griend' (unhabited island for birds) and 'alk'
  • In Danish, you find more words with a Dutch origin: matros, vaterpas, kvaksalver,  togt, flag, blomkål, te, bestorme, kukkelure, forsigtig, skørbuk, døgenigt
  • Why more Dutch words in DK.....?
