Rule 1: When there is a form of "to be" or other "hulpwerkwoorden" such as can and may. 


Questions: Place the verb at the beginning of the question. 
  • My brother and I are swimming outside. --> Are your brother and you swimming outside? 
  • We may go to our locker. --> May we go to our locker? 
  • We can go home a bit earlier today. --> Can we go home a bit earlier today? 

Negations: place not/n't after the verb. 
  • My brother and I are swimming outside. --> We aren't swimming outside. 
  • We may go to our locker. --> We may not go to our locker. 
  • We can go home a bit earlier today. --> We cannot go home a bit earlier today. 




Rule 2: Only in the present and past simple. (heden en verleden) with other main verbs. 


Questions: place do/does/did at the beginning of the questions. 
  • We swam outside. --> Did you swim outside? 
  • We swim outside. --> Do we swim outside? 
  • He swims outside. --> Does he swim outside?



Negations: Place do/did + not/n't before the main verb. 
  • We swam outside --> We didn't swim outside. 
  • We swim outside --> We don't swim outside. 
  • He swims outside. --> He doesn't swim outside.
