The Dutch provinces
Remember that Mary of burgundy maried Maximilian I of Austria?

He was a Habsburg ruler. So when Mary died the Burgundian Netherland were called the Habsburg Netherlands from 1482.

4.3 Charles V
In 1506 Charles V (Karel 5e) becomes the new leader of the Habsburg dynasty (familie).
His territory becomes even bigger when he:
Becomes king of Spain in 1516
Becomes the German emperor in 1520

Because he is king of Spain he is also in control of some land in the New World. What do we mean by the new world?

4.3 Charles V
The territory of Charles V is too big to rule on his own.
He asks his aunt Margaret of Austria to become his viceroy (Soort onderkoning)
She is in charge of the Habsburg Netherlands.

In 1531 Charles comes up with the idea to rule the Netherlands with 3 coucils instead of having all the different provinces.
