Prefixes & suffixes

Prefixes

Prefixes are a group of letters that are added to 

the beginning of a word and change its meaning

examples

un = not. For example, unhappy, unlocked, unfair

dis and mis = negative. For example, disagree, disobey, misbehave, mislead

re = again or back. For example, redo, reappear, redecorate

sub = under. For example, subheading or submarine

Suffixes

A suffix is a letter or group of letters that goes on the end of a word and changes the word's meaning.

A suffix goes...

1. at the start of a word
2. in the middle of a word
3. at the end of a word

Which word contains a suffix?

1. garden
2. gardening
3. grass
4. unguarded

Which suffix changes a word to past tense?

1. -ing
2. -ed
3. -ly
4. -ful

To change a noun (z.nw) into a verb (w.w) we can add the suffix:

1. -ing
2. -ly
3. mis-
4. -ation
