Sea Shepherd has the largest privately owned navy in the world, working
tirelessly to protect marine wildlife worldwide.

Our ships are crewed
mainly by volunteers and funded by our supporters who believe in
securing the future of the ocean.

When Sea Shepherd started in 1977 Captain Watson had no funds and no ship, but that didn’t stop him. With support from the Fund for Animals and RSPCA (USA) Captain Watson purchased our first vessel in 1978, called the Sea Shepherd.   

LA FLOTTA DI SEA SHEPHERD

Sea Shepherd possiede la più grande flotta privata del mondo, che lavora non-stop per proteggere l’ecosistema marino di tutto il mondo.

Gli equipaggi delle nostre navi sono composti principalmente da volontari e le imbarcazioni vengono finanziate dai nostri sostenitori, che desiderano salvaguardare il futuro dei nostri oceani.

Il Capitano Paul Watson fondò Sea Shepherd nel 1977 senza fondi né imbarcazioni, ma questo non lo arrestò. Grazie al supporto di Fund for Animals e della RSPCA (Stati Uniti) il Capitano Watson riuscì ad acquistare la prima nave nel 1978 e la rinominò Sea Shepherd.

The Ocean Warrior is our flagship vessel and is the first vessel in our history we have purchased as brand new. It was custom-made for us with funds awarded to Sea Shepherd Global by the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s “Dream Project”. The Ocean Warrior’s maiden campaign was Operation Nemesis.  The M/Y Ocean Warrior is 54m in length and is specifically designed to send to Antarctica to take on poachers.  It is as fast supply vessel and the fastest ship, with a top speed of over 30 knots. It carries a crew of 14

M/Y OCEAN WARRIOR

The Ocean Warrior is our flagship vessel and is the first vessel in our history we have purchased as brand new. It was custom-made for us with funds awarded to Sea Shepherd Global by the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s “Dream Project”. The Ocean Warrior’s maiden campaign was Operation Nemesis, Sea Shepherd’s 11th Antarctica Whale Defence Campaign. 

The M/Y Ocean Warrior is 54m in length and is specifically designed to send to Antarctica to take on poachers.  It is as fast supply vessel and the fastest ship we have ever had, with a top speed of over 30 knots. Which is faster than the Japanese harpoon vessels. It carries a crew of 14.  

La Ocean Warrior è la nostra nave ammiraglia e la prima nave nella storia di Sea Shepherd acquistata completamente nuova. È stata costruita su misura per la nostra associazione grazie ai fondi vinti da Sea Shepherd Global dal progetto “Dream Project” della lotteria dei codici postali olandese. La campagna inaugurale di Ocean Warrior è stata l’Operazione Nemesis. La M/Y Ocean Warrior misura 54 metri di lunghezza ed è progettata appositamente per contrastare i bracconieri nei mari dell’Antartide. É una nave ausiliaria e la più veloce della flotta, con una velocità massima di 30 nodi. Può trasportare fino a 14 persone.

M/Y BOB BARKER   In 2009 Sea Shepherd secretly purchased and refitted a former Norwegian whaler in Africa. It's first mission was Operation Waltzing Matilda. Interesting Fact: The Bob Barker originally operated as a whaling ship until 1962, and later confronted Sea Shepherd during its life as a Norwegian Coast Guard vessel.
The Bob is about 52m long and has a crew of around 36. 

M/Y BOB BARKER
Thanks to a $5 million contribution from the legendary American game show host Bob Barker, in 2009 Sea Shepherd secretly purchased and refitted a former Norwegian whaler in Africa. The ice-strengthened chaser boat quietly departed from Mauritius on December 18th for its first mission against the Japanese whaling fleet, Operation Waltzing Matilda. Interesting Fact: The Bob Barker originally operated as a whaling ship until 1962, and later confronted Sea Shepherd during its life as a Norwegian Coast Guard vessel.

The Bob is about 52m long and has a crew of around 36. The vessel has campaigned in Antarctica against the whalers and now in Africa where it is focusing on anti-poaching campaigns. It holds the record for the longest pursuit of a poacher, after chasing the Thunder from Antarctica to Sao Tome over 110 days.

M/Y BOB BARKER  Segretamente, nel 2009 in Africa, Sea Shepherd comprò e ristrutturò un vecchio baleniere norvegese. La sua prima missione è stata l’Operazione Waltzing Matilda. Curiosità: La Bob Barker è stata utilizzata come baleniera fino al 1962, successivamente si è confrontata con Sea Shepherd mentre operava da nave della guardia costiera norvegese. La Bob misura 52 metri di lunghezza e ha un può trasportare fino a 36 persone.

The M/Y Sam Simon was named after the Hollywood producer most famously known for developing The Simpsons, who served on Sea Shepherd’s Board of Advisors until his passing away in 2015. His generous donation made it possible to purchase the former Japanese vessel in 2012, when it joined its first Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign that December, Operation Zero Tolerance. Interesting Fact: The Sam Simon, originally named the Seifu Maru, was a Meteorological Observation Ship for the Japanese whaling fleet.

M/Y SAM SIMON
The Sam Simon was named after the Hollywood producer most famously known for developing The Simpsons, an animal rights advocate who served on Sea Shepherd’s Board of Advisors until his passing away in 2015. His generous donation made it possible to purchase the former Japanese vessel in 2012, when it joined its first Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign that December, Operation Zero Tolerance. Interesting Fact: The Sam Simon, originally named the Seifu Maru, was a Meteorological Observation Ship for the Japanese whaling fleet.

La M/Y Sam Simon prende il nome dal produttore di Hollywood, conosciuto soprattutto per la creazione dei Simpson, il quale ha fatto parte del consiglio dei saggi di Sea Shepherd fino a quando è venuto a mancare nel 2015. Le sue donazioni generose ci hanno permesso nel 2012 di acquistare la vecchia nave giapponese. In quello stesso anno, a dicembre, la nave prese parte alla prima campagna in difesa delle balene nell’Oceano Antartico, l’Operazione Tolleranza Zero. Curiosità: inizialmente la Sam Simon si chiamava Seifu Maru ed era una nave meteorologica della flotta baleniera giapponese. 

M/V STEVE IRWIN - RETIRED

M/V STEVE IRWIN - RITIRATA

La Steve Irwin è la nostra nave più conosciuta e anche la nostra vecchia nave ammiraglia, ritirata a dicembre del 2018. Era un ex nave da pesca scozzese, costruita nel 1975, acquistata da Sea Shepherd nel 2006. Misurava circa 59 metri di lunghezza e pesava circa 885 tonnellate. Poteva inoltre trasportare fino a un massimo di 46 persone.

La Steve Irwin si chiamava inizialmente Robert Hunter. La sua prima spedizione è stata quella del 2006/2007 durante la campagna in difesa delle balene nell’Oceano Antartico (Operazione Leviathan). La nave è stata poi rinominata M/Y Steve Irwin nel dicembre del 2007 in onore del defunto ambientalista australiano e sostenitore di Sea Shepherd. La Steve Irwin ha partecipato a 18 campagne di difesa dell’oceano, più di qualsiasi altra nave di Sea Shepherd fino ad allora.

MV Farley Mowat, MV John Paul DeJoira and MV Sharpie are ex-US Coast Guard island class cutters, who have joined the Sea Shepherd fleet.  They are 34 metres long, reaching speeds of 25+ kn and carry a crew of 16.

La M/V Farley Mowat, la M/V John Paul DeJoira e la M/V Sharpie sono ex pattugliatori della guardia costiera statunitense, che sono entrate a far parte della flotta di Sea Shepherd. Misurano 34 metri di lunghezza, raggiungono 25+ kn di velocità e possono trasportare fino a 16 persone.

R/V Martin Sheen

 Named in honour of long time supporter and actor Martin Sheen. It is our research vessel, which joined the fleet in 2014. It is just over 27m and crew of 6. The vessel has participated in research on whales, microplastics and impacts of salmon farms.

La nave è stata chiamata così in onore dell’attore e nostro sostenitore di lunga durata Martin Sheen. Si tratta della nostra nave di ricerca, entrata a far parte della flotta nel 2014, dai 27 metri di lunghezza e una capacità di massimo 6 persone.

 

Ha preso parte a ricerche sulle balene, le microplastiche e l’impatto degli allevamenti di salmoni.

 

OUR WEAPONS IN THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE OCEANS

RHIBS or rigid hulled inflatable boats.  Most of our larger vessels have one or two RHIBS on board, to be used during campaigns.  The speed of these boats make them ideal for chasing down poaching vessels, they can then be boarded by the law enforcement officials we are working with.

I gommoni. La maggior parte delle navi più grosse della nostra flotta dispone di uno o due gommoni, utilizzabili durante le campagne. La loro velocità risulta utile per inseguire le navi bracconiere. Possono ospitare a bordo agenti delle forze dell’ordine con le quali stiamo collaborando.

OUR WEAPONS IN THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE OCEANS

Helicopters and drones – these are useful tools in our fight to defend the oceans. With helicopters we are able to fly longer distances to try and track down illegal poachers, this was very useful in chasing the whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean and being able to document their activities. 

Drones are our latest valuable weapon in this war.  Drones are able to fly at any time of day or night to document illegal fishing and locate illegal nets.

Droni ed elicotteri, strumenti molto utili nella nostra lotta in difesa degli oceani. Grazie agli elicotteri possiamo viaggiare su lunghe distanze e scovare i bracconieri. Ci sono risultati molto utili per inseguire le flotte baleniere nell’Oceano Antartico e per documentare le loro attività.

I droni sono le armi più importanti fra quelle recenti in questa guerra; sono infatti capaci di volare in qualsiasi ora del giorno e della notte per documentare attività di pesca illegale o individuare reti da pesca illegali.

Photographers and videographers

Our photographers and videographers are key to documenting illegal activities.  Capturing the images and video of illegal operations provides evidence for law enforcement to use in prosecuting perpetrators and enables us to show the world what is taking place out on the oceans.

I nostri fotografi e videomaker sono fondamentali per documentare le attività illegali. Immortalare con foto e video le operazioni illegali ci fornisce delle prove da presentare alle autorità e da poter usare per accusare i malfattori. Ci permettono inoltre di mostrare al mondo intero cosa sta succedendo nei nostri oceani.
