When= 1581-1588 (16th century).

Where= Delft and seven northern Dutch provinces.

Who= Philip II, William of Orange & Balthasar Gerards.

What=  Political assassination & the search for a new leader.

Why= To understand  why the Netherlands became the first early modern republic (state without a king). 

Objectives for this lesson

1. Understand why Willem of Orange was  assassinated. 
2. Understand how seven Dutch provinces became a republic. 

1581 

Seven provinces join the rebellion against Filip II. 

Meanwhile in Spain....

To Philip II, William of Orange is his big enemy. He promises a hefty sum for anyway who is able to kill him.

He declared William an outlaw.

1584- Moord op Willem van Oranje

The States General is confused

Hendrik III of France

He didn't want to cause a war between Spain and France so he refused. 

Elizabeth I of England

They asked Elizabeth I but she refused.

Couldn't find a new king or queen

In 1588 the States General declared the 7 provinces the: 

Republic of the seven united Netherlands (or short Dutch Republic)

William of Orange assassinated
