Senses in the human

Sense (zintuig) = "meetapparatuur"/ receptor om de omgeving mee waar te nemen.   All senses = sensory system

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Senses
In the senses are sensory cells, they are connected to nerve cells (that send              impulses
towards the brain)

Slide 6 - Diapositive

What happens with stimuli?
Stimuli are sensed by sensory cells
They produce impulses

The impulses  ('seintjes')
go towards and from the brain

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Perceiving and reacting to the environment

stimuli - (impuls)->   Perception   -(impuls)->    Reaction
(effect)

Leerdoelen

Slide 9 - Diapositive

The nervous system

  • Central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)

  • Seperate nerves

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Nerve cells
We have billions of nerve cells

  • Cell body and long protrusions called: axons and dendrites

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Nerves
  • Big bundles consisting of many nerve cells

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Nervous system in action
  1. Senses receive stimuli
  2. Sensory cells produce impulses
  3. Impulses travel by nerves to the spinal cord
  4. Trough spinal cord towards the brain
  5. The brain processes these impulses to perceive
    the environment, (conscience = bewustzijn)
  6. Impulses are sent down to the muscles and glands.
  7. Muscles and glands react  (effect)

"move arm towards chocolate and produce saliva"

Slide 19 - Diapositive

Types of stimuli
  • Some stimuli are too weak, beneath the threshold value of the sensory organ: you don't notice them
  • Adequate stimulus = stimulus belonging to a sensory organ, low threshold value. (e.g. light for eyes
  • Stronger stimulus > higher amount of impulses = higher impulse frequency

Slide 20 - Diapositive

How impulses start
Stimulus needs to be strong enough. The lowest intensity of stimulus that causes an impulse = threshold value.

A stimulus must first reach the threshold value. If the stimulus then gets even stronger, the impulse frequency increases: more impulses are sent every second. The strength of the signal is always the same in an impulse
