Je moet de werkwoorden van de zin steeds één stapje terug in de tijd zetten. 
  • simple present --> simple past
  • present perfect --> past perfect
  • present continuous --> past continuous
  • simple past --> past perfect
  • hulp ww naar verleden tijd (will -> would, may -> might, can -> could)

Hoe ziet dat eruit? 
  • 'I am late for school!' --> She said that she was late for school. 
  • 'We have visited her.' --> They mentioned they had visited her. 
  • 'You are not listening!' --> He said that I was not listening
  • 'They bought a house.' --> You told me that they had bought a house.
  • 'He will be late.' --> She complained that he would be late.
