What does it mean if something is countable?

Countable/Uncountable

• Countable nouns can be singular (enkelvoud) or plural (meervoud).
  
• Uncountable nouns are always singular.
• Countable nouns can be measured or quantified.
  
  
  

Countable
a car, three cars

a book, a box full of books

a city, several big cities
an apple, three apples
a man, two men 

Uncountable
money, air, sky, clothing, rain
Ideas and experiences: advice, information, progress, news, luck, fun, work

Materials and substances: water, rice, cement, gold, milk

Weather words: weather, thunder, lightning, rain, snow

Names for groups or collections of things: furniture, equipment, rubbish, luggage

Other common uncountable nouns include: accommodation, baggage, homework, knowledge, money, permission, research, traffic, travel.

These nouns are not used with a/an or numbers and are not used in the plural.

Wat is een adjective?

Bijvoeglijk naamwoord

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, in het Engels adjective genaamd, omschrijft een zelfstandig naamwoord en staat ook meestal voor het zelfstandig naamwoord.

Enkele voorbeelden:

A nice house

A sharp knife

Wanneer gebruiken we adjectives?

Om een smaak aan te geven:

Bitter, spicy, tasty, fruity, salty, sour, sweet, delicious

Om geluid te verduidelijken:

Silent, squealing, loud, mute, quiet, voiceless, moaning

Om kleur aan te geven:

Gray, yellow, black, dark, gold, silver, red, blue

Om grootte aan te duiden:

Large, little, fat, giant, immense, small, tall, short, thin

Om vorm aan te duiden:

Round, oval, curved, low, wide, narrow, circular
