Grammar: Some and Any

What does it mean? 

What is the difference? 

Some and Any 

Als je some of any gebruikt:

-  ben je minder specifiek dan als je een hoeveelheid noemt. (onbepaalde voornaamwoorden (indefinit pronouns)). 

Some en any betekenen hetzelfde: een aantal, enkele of wat. 

Some and Any 

- Bij een bevestigende / neutrale zin gebruik je some: I have some cookies = Ik heb wat / een paar koekjes.

- Bij een ontkennende / negatieve zin gebruik je any: I don't have any cookies = Ik heb geen koekjes.

- Bij een vragende zin gebruik je any: Do you have any cookies left? = Heb je wat koekjes over?

Some and Any

1) Je gebruikt some in een vragende zin waarbij je JA als antwoord verwacht:

- Do you have any friends living in foreign countries? --> geen idee wat het antwoord is...

- Can I please have some water? (asking to a waiter) --> je verwacht JA als antwoord...

2) Je gebruikt some in een vragende zin waneer je iemand iets aanbiedt:

- Would you like to have some coffee? --> je biedt iemand koffie aan...

- Can I give you some biscuits next to your coffee? --> je biedt iemand koekjes aan...

3) Je gebruikt any in een zin die niet ontkennend of niet vragend is als iets niet uitmaakt:

- Put on any song you like. I love all kinds of music! --> Maakt niet uit welk nummer je opzet...

- Give me any food you can find, I am just really hungry. --> Maakt niet uit welk voedsel...

You use Some and Any if something isn't that specific.

Grammar: Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Present Simple

To talk about facts, habits and schedules or specific time. 

Example:

Verb: to be

I   am. 

You/ we/ they   are. 

She/ he/ it   is. 

Present Continuous

To talk about things that are happing at this moment or right now. 

How: to be + verb + ing 

Example: 

Verb: walk 

I  am walking 

You/we/they are walking 

She/ he/ it is walking 

Present simple vs Present Continuous

How do you recognize when you use which?
