The Past Continuous

Wat valt je op aan de werkwoorden in het verhaaltje hieronder?
Early in the morning my grandmother was working in her garden. She was cutting the grass, she was watering the plants and she was looking at the bees on the flowers.

Past Continuous

Je gebruikt de Past Continuous om aan te geven dat iemand ergens mee bezig was op een bepaald moment in het verleden. 

Je zegt dus dat iemand iets "aan het doen" was.

Past Continuous

Je gebruikt de Past Continuous dus alleen als je kunt zeggen dat iemand iets aan het doen was:

Jack was reading.

Past Continuous

Je gebruikt de Past Continuous dus alleen als je kunt zeggen dat iemand iets aan het doen was:

My father was watching television, while my mother was cooking.

Past Continuous

Je maakt de Past Continuous op de volgende manier:

was (I, he, she, it) / were (you, we, they) + werkwoord + ing 

EXAMPLE:

My mom was cooking dinner while we were playing outside.

Past Continuous - Spellingsregels

1) Bij een werkwoord dat eindigt op een -e, valt de -e weg, hierna krijg je -ing erachter.

EXAMPLE: to have - We were having a party.

2) Bij een kort werkwoord (1 lettergreep) dat eindigt op 1 klinker en 1 medeklinker, verdubbelt de medeklinker, hierna krijg je -ing erachter.

EXAMPLE: to hit - He was hitting the balls with his bat.

Past Continuous

Je maakt een ontkenning op de volgende manier:

was / were + NOT + werkwoord + ing 

EXAMPLE: 

My mom was not (wasn't) cooking dinner while we were playing outside.

Past Continuous

Je maakt een vraag op de volgende manier:

was / were -> vooraan in de zin zetten

 + werkwoord + ing 

EXAMPLE: 

 Was your mother cooking dinner while you were playing outside?
