De lijdende vorm
Het is niet belangrijk wie wat doet, maar wat er met iets gedaan wordt.
Active: John reads a book.
Passive: A book is read by John.
Active: They have cancelled all flights.
Passive: All flight have been cancelled.

Als je een bedrijvende (active) zin omzet naar een lijdende (passive) zin, moet je ervoor zorgen dat de zin in dezelfde grammaticale tijd blijft staan.

Er staat altijd een vorm van 'to be' in de zin. 'to be' wordt vervoegd zodat het in de juiste grammaticale tijd staat. Hierna komt altijd het voltooid deelwoord.

Lijdende vorm: De focus ligt niet op wie wat doet, maar op wat er gedaan wordt
De film werd bekeken.
De krant wordt gelezen.
Een cadeau is gegeven.
Grammaticale tijden worden hetzelfde gebruikt, alleen is de vorm iets anders. Overal wordt een vorm van 'to be' aan toegevoegd + voltooid deelwoord.
De vorm van 'to be' wordt vervoegd zoals de 'normale' grammaticale tijd wordt vervoegd.

Daarnaast gebruik je in het Engels de passive bij Nederlandse uitdrukkingen met 'er' of 'men'. In het Engels gebruik je dan een formulering met 'it'.
Er wordt gezegd... - It is said
Men dacht... - It was thought
