Rules for making the past continuous

Past continuous vs. past simple

You use the past continuous together with the past simple to describe a short action (past simple) that happened when something else was going on (long action; past continuous).

 

I was reading a book when the phone rang.

I was washing my car when the accident happened. 

We (talk) when the accident happened.

I (go) to school when you saw me.

(you + sleep) when I got home?

He (meet) a lot of friendly people while he was working in California.

The students were playing cards when the teacher (enter) the classroom.

It (start) to rain while she (water) the flowers in her garden.
