Small intestine

• Function: absorb nutrients, digestive products, and water into the blood.
• Large surface area for quick absorption.
• The intestinal glands produce intestinal juice: digestion of proteins and carbohydrates.

Structure of the small intestine

• Large surface area due to intestinal folds and villi
• Absorption through the intestinal wall into the blood vessels

Large intestine

• Function: absorbing water from the pulp of undigested food residues
• The large intestine contains many bacteria that aid in the digestion of cellulose.

Rectum

• Collection and storage of food waste
• Anus: a sphincter muscle that allows waste to pass. It is usually contracted.
