What do you know about the Dutch revolt?

Slide 1 - Carte mentale

Key questions for today..

- How did Philip II try to centralise his rule?
- What was the Iconoclastic Fury?

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Charles V (5)
Charles V was overlord  (lord of all provinces) of all Dutch provinces. He ruled the Dutch form Brussels, but was often somewhere else in his empire.

The Dutch provinces were vere independent (onafhankelijk) and ruled themselves.

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Every Dutch province (gewest) had an assembly, the States, which made dicisions about that province. On a more 'national' level the Dutch were ruled by the States-General. The States sent representatives to the States-General.

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Charles V tried to gain more power over the provinces by appointing nobles to represent him, stadholders. When Charles was elsewhere in his empire a governor (landvoogd(es)) would rule in his place. They were advised by civil servants (ambtenaren) and nobles (edelen).

In 1555 Charles' son Philip II became overlord of the Netherlands. In 1559 he went back to Spain and appointed his half-sister Margaret of Parma as governor of the Netherlands. From this point relations between Philip and the Dutch nobility deteriorated (verslechterde).

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Philip tried to decrease the power of the Dutch nobility. He preferred to rule with paid civil servants, because he could fire them when he was dissatisfied. He wanted to centralize (centraliseren) his rule.

The relationship between Philip and the Dutch citizens also deteriorated. Because....

Slide 7 - Diapositive

1. Philip waged expensive wars and citizens had to pay taxes to fund these wars.
2. Philip tried to centralise. This policy deprived the Dutch from their freedom to govern themselves.
3. Philip wanted to exterminate Protestantism, but many people in the Netherlands were Calvinists.

Iconoclastic Fury
In April 1566 hundreds of nobles marched on the palace of Margaret of Parma (governor). They wanted her to stop the persecution (vervolging) of Protestants. The governor temporarily (tijdelijk) ended the prosecutions. Calvinists openly start hedge-preaching (hagenpreken).

Slide 9 - Diapositive

During one of these hedge-preachings a preacher in Flanders raged about he worshipping of saints, a Catholic tradition. Calvinists took action immediately and started to smash all the statues in the nearest monastery (klooster). This is the beginning of the Iconoclastic Fury  (Beeldenstorm).
