At the end of the lesson, you will be able to understand and use the past simple tense through various activities.

What do you already know about the past simple tense?

Past Simple Tense

The past simple is a verb tense used to talk about completed actions or states in the past.

Regular Verbs

Regular verbs in the past simple end in -ed. For example: walk -> walked, talk -> talked, play -> played.

Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs in the past simple do not follow a pattern and must be memorized. For example: go -> went, eat -> ate, see -> saw.

Activity 1: Regular or Irregular?

Choose whether the following verbs are regular or irregular in the past simple: jump, walked, drink, played, run, saw.

Activity 2: Fill in the Blanks

Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in parentheses: Yesterday, I (go) to the park and (play) soccer with my friends.

Negative and Interrogative Forms

To make the negative form of the past simple, use did not (didn't) + base form of the verb. To make the interrogative form of the past simple, use did + subject + base form of the verb.

Activity 3: Negative and Interrogative Forms

Rewrite the following sentences in the negative and interrogative forms: I played soccer yesterday. Did you eat breakfast this morning?

Time Expressions

Some common time expressions used with the past simple are yesterday, last week, ago, and in 1985.

Activity 4: Time Expressions

Match the following time expressions with the correct verb tense: yesterday (past simple), tomorrow (future simple), last month (past simple), next year (future simple).

Reading and Writing

Read a short passage in the past simple and answer comprehension questions. Write a paragraph about a past event using the past simple.
