Be able to give extra information about someone or something in one sentence, using a relative clause and that/which/who/whose/whom

Relative clauses 

Een relative clause is een bijzin die extra informatie geeft over iets of iemand. Deze bijzinnen kunnen met een aantal woorden beginnen:

Who        

Gebruik je als de bijzin iets zegt over een persoon

She is the girl who won the prize

Sam, who lives next door, is my best friend.

Which

Gebruik je als de bijzin iets zegt over dieren of dingen.

The food, which my mother cooked, tastes great.

The cap which I bought yesterday is blue.

Whose

Gebruik je als je bezit aangeeft. In het NL zeg je dan 'van wie' of 'waarvan'

The girl, whose dad is a bus driver, always walks to school.

Whom

Soms is het eerste woord van de bijzin een voorzetsel. Als je dan iets over een persoon zegt, zeg je whom in plaats van who.

The boy, about whom you told me, is very nice.

My aunt, to whom I'm going next week, lives in Spain.

What is a relative clause?

Een betrekkelijke bijzin. 

Deze gebruik je als je extra info over iets of iemand wilt geven. 

Bijvoorbeeld:

Die laptop, die op tafel staat, is van de docent.

• Verwijzen terug naar een eerder genoemd woord
  
• Verbinden twee zinsdelen aan elkaar

Martin played Tennis with Sophie, who was slightly injured.

WHO: bij mensen

WHICH: bij dieren en dingen

THAT: bij personen, dieren en dingen (maar niet na een comma!)

WHOM: bij mensen na een voorzetsel

WHOSE: bij bezit (van wie/wiens)
