Past simple vs past continuous

Past simple

Aangeven dat iets in het verleden plaatsvond / gebeurde.

Werkwoord + ed of irregular (onregelmatig)

I walked for hours yesterday.

I made a shocking discovery.

Past continuous

Aangeven dat iets op een bepaald moment in het verleden aan de gang was.

Verleden tijd to be (was/were) + ing

He was looking down the hill.

They were searching all night long.

Past simple + continuous

Combinatie: geeft aan dat er iets gebeurde (simple) terwijl er iets anders aan de gang was (continuous).

He broke his leg when he was skiing. 

I was looking around when I saw him standing there.

Past simple + continuous

Use the past simple or past continuous:

1. Lucy ____ (go) to her interview.

2. He ____ (always fall) in love when he ____ (be) younger.

3. When she ____ (break) her arm, the doctor ____ (give) her two weeks off.

4. By the time we got there, everyone ____(go) home. 

Past simple + continuous
