Food for Thought

Literary devices are specific techniques that allow a writer to convey a deeper meaning that goes beyond what's on the page. Literary devices work alongside plot and characters to elevate a story and prompt reflection on life, society, and what it means to be human.


Examples of literary devices: 
  • verbal irony (meaning the opposite of what is said); 
  • dramatic irony (audience knows what is about to happen; character doesn't know)
  • foreshadowing/flashback
  • metaphor (a comparison without "as" or "like" - an object etc. has a deeper meaning, i.e. Bob is a couch potato; He's the black sheep in the family; You're on fire.)
  • personification (attributing human traits to inhuman things - i.e. Chaos rules in here. The wind howled at night. That chocolate is calling my name)

Spelling adverbs
You form adverbs by adding -LY to the adjective

Special spelling rules for adjectives ending in:

le -> ly

y -> ily

ic -> ically

ful-> fully

true -> truly

bad -> badly.    / shy -> shyly

Comparative/superlative of adverbs
You form the comparative/superlative of adverbs by adding more/most

She sings beautifully.
She sings more beautifully.
He sings most beautifully.
