Je gebruikt deze twee tijden in één zin wanneer:
- er iets aan de gang is en iets anders ineens gebeurd:

 1. Ik was aan het douchen toen mijn moeder belde
I was showering when my mother called
2. Mijn hond was aan het blaffen terwijl ik aan het koken was
My dog barked while I was cooking

Hetgene wat het langst duurt (en het eerst begint), zet je in de past continuous
- was/were + werkwoord + ing

Hetgene wat het kortst duurt (en het laatst begint), zet je in de past simple
+ ed
