Reading a text: connecting

1.Purpose of a text (what does the writer want from you):

    Inform, instruct, persuade, entertain

2.Activate prior knowledge: what do you already know about      the subject.

Reading a text: read the questions

*open                 *fill in the gap

*true or false    *quote

-Skimming: topic and main points, getting the author's point of view

-Scanning: specific information/details

-Intensive Reading: complete understanding of the text 

Word Guessing Strategies

1. synonym or antonym


2. look at immediate or wider context: there may be a definition or an example that will help you guess the meaning of the word
3. look at parts of the word you may know: prefix - suffix
4. use your knowledge of other languages
