At the end of this lesson you will know when to use which relative pronouns. 

Relative pronouns 

who, whose, whom, which

Verwijzen naar eerder genoemde personen, dieren of dingen. 

Gebruiken wanneer je meer informatie geeft over deze personen, dieren of dingen. 

Nederlands: dat, die, wie, wat, welke

relative pronouns - personen

• who (die / dat)                             
  The girl who fell of stage was my classmate. 
• whose (wiens / wier = van wie // kan ook voor dingen. Geeft bezit aan)
  He is the boy whose iPhone I found. 
  That book, whose title was: Harry Potter, was a great read! 
• whom (wie) Alleen achter een voorzetsel. (formeel taalgebruik)
  I like the collegues with whom I have to work.
• (I like the collegues who I have to work with)

which (wat / dat, welke)

I dropped my iPhone, which was brand new. 

I shot the cat, which killed my parakeet

who, which and that

wanneer 'that'

'that' kun je gebruiken in plaats van who en which. 

Alleen als de bijzin (deel met that) nodig is om zin te begrijpen.

De bijzin staat dan niet tussen komma's = informatie is verplicht

voorbeelden 'that'

Silvia is the girl who I have known for many years now. 

Men who steal are thieves. 

The house which has a blue roof is being painted.

je mag de blauwe woorden vervangen door 'that'

my cousin, who is 40, is a teacher = hier geen that!

Never replace when...

...who or which are written right after a comma (,). 

✔️ I just stared at Fred, who ... 

❌ I just stared at Fred, that ...

where

waar - where (wanneer het naar plaats verwijst.)

Dit is het moment waar ik op had gewacht - 

This is the moment (that / which) I had been waiting for.

Dat is waar zij woont. - That is where she lives.
