It refers to an object or subject

I like France - I like the food in France

What I like about France is the food.

He said something - I didn't like it

I didn't like what he said.

what is a relative clause?

My brother, who is 24 years old, still lives at home.

So, the relative proboun who only relates to persons.

Now we start with the relative pronouns: WHICH

Relative clauses

The thief, who robbed an old lady, was sent to jail.

A relative clause gives extra information about someone or something, a situation and refers back to it.

We can use who, which, that, whose, where and when

• who - for referring to people
  
• which - for referring to animals  and things
  
• that - persons, animals, things
  
• whose - referring to things someone possesses
  
• where - referring to a place; when to time
  

The relative pronoun

c:

in this sentence is another meaning: the action of deling a picture is upsetting me! But 'that' is NOT POSSIBLE: there is a comma between the two clauses. 

RULE: No comma before 'that'!

a and b: 

Both 'which' and 'that' can be used. If so, we use NO COMMAS. The meaning of the sentence doen's really change. The picture upsets you. 

CONSTRUCTION RULES:

Relative pronouns who, which and that:

who/that > persons

which/that > things and animals 

!NO COMMAS before 'that'!

When we can chose who or that; which or that, we often leave that out.

These are other terms for (in)direct clauses 

1. A restrictive clause takes a clause with information you can't leave out. We need the information for better understanding.

2. A non - restrictive clause takes a clause with information you can leave out.

Do you know the girl who/that sings at the Prom?

Students whose parents are rich pay extra fees.

My neighbour, whose wife is my teacher, waters the plants every day.
