Q: What's the difference between the meanings of past simple and used to?

A: 'used to' means that something was different in the past; the past simple doesn't tell us about a difference, just that something happened.

> e.g. They used to live in the city VS. They lived in the city.

We use 'used to' to talk about something that was different in the past.

> e.g. I used to have really long hair (now I don't anymore).

> e.g. I used to party until sunrise (but now I prefer to party in the daytime).

In its negative form, it's the opposite.

> e.g. I didn't use to have long hair (but now I do).

> e.g. People didn't use to travel this far across the globe (but now they do).

IMPORTANT! the -d in 'used to' disappears in the negative (= didn't use to)

Flying used to be something only rich people could afford. It didn't use to be so cheap and accessible for everyone.
