How was power held in Medieval Japan?
One group who was at the top of Medieval society was the Emperor. There was one emperor in Japan and he held land and was considered the head of the country. The Emperor had limited real power because they were controlled by the Shogun. The Emperor held all the land but it was the Shogun who decided who received the land, so the Emperor was in effect a puppet of the Shogun.
