Strategy: Tackling difficult words
Sometimes you come across difficult words when you’re reading. However, you don’t have to know all the words to be able to understand a text:
  1. You recognise a Dutch word: international - internationaal
  2. You recognise a word from another language: préparer - preparing
  3. You can also guess the meaning from the context: the sentence the word is in, or the surrounding sentences: a turtle in Japan caused trouble after taking a little stroll along the tarmac - asfalt.

Slide 7 - Slide

Let's practice!
Answer the question about text 2 and 3 without reading it!
  1. Look at the picture: what do you think the text is about?
  2. What do you think happened?
Now read the text and underline the words you don't know:
  1. Were you right?
  2. Can you use one of the strategies to find out the meaning of these words?
