Direct: June : "It is my birthday today"
Indirect: June said that it was her birthday that day.

Indirect speech
Is used when we report what someone else said. 

The backshift in tense happens because we are not sure if this is still true or relevant

  • 'I am late for school!' --> She said that she was late for school. 
  • 'We have visited her.' --> They mentioned they had visited her. 
  • 'You are not listening!' --> He said that I was not listening
  • 'They bought a house.' --> You told me that they had bought a house.
  • 'He will be late.' --> She complained that he would be late.

Indirect speech -Hoe doe je dat?
Je moet de werkwoorden van de zin steeds één stapje terug in de tijd zetten. 
  • Present simple --> Past simple 
  • Present perfect --> Past perfect
  • Present continuous --> Past continuous
  • Past simple --> Past perfect
  • hulp ww naar verleden tijd (will -> would, may -> might, can -> could, must-> had to)
