During the early 8th century, a large part of Spain was conquered by the Moors: Muslims from Morocco and Algeria.

The Moors named the conquered territory
Al-Andalus (Land of the Vandals). The area was originally part of the Arab empire.

From 756 onwards, the emirate of Córdoba became autonomous. It was governed by an emir: Arab monarch.

Moorish Spain had an agricultural-urban society with a prosperous economy.
Society was multicultural, and the Arab culture was flourishing.
 

In addition to Christians, the region was home to Jews, Berbers and Muslims from other countries.

Through Moorish Spain, a great deal of knowledge from the antique and Arab worlds came to Europe.
Moorish monarchs created large libraries with books by Greek and Arab writers.

In 801, Charlemagne conquered Barcelona from the Moors.

From circa 1000 to 1492, Christian monarchs from Northern Spain conquered the Moorish territories. This is known as the Reconquista.
