• Trading with foreign countries stimulated new diplomatic relationships.
• Trading caused an increase in jobs in the Republic -> WORKERS NEEDED!

In search for work

• Workers migrated from Germany, Denmark, Austria tot work in het republic.

They worked in ports, in the army and in the industry. 

In search for freedom

Other countries: 

• No freedom of religion.
• No freedom of speech and writing.

Many fled from Spain, Portugal, France to the Republic.
