Wat is the gerund? 
Soms kan je een werkwoord als zelfstandig naamwoord gebruiken, in dat geval spreken we van the gerund. 

The gerund is eigenlijk niets anders dan een werkwoord waar je -ing achter zet.

Wat is the gerund NIET: 
I am watching a video.
He is playing soccer with his brother.
She was doing her homework. 

Dit is de present/past continuous.

I love playing a game tonight. 
Laughing is good for you. 
Susie likes shopping. 

Hier wordt het werkwoord gebruikt als zelfstandig naamwoord, je spreekt dan van the gerund.

Wanneer gebruik je the gerund? 
Schrijf mee! 

Na werkwoorden waarmee je aangeeft wat je wel of niet leuk vindt (like, dislike, love, hate, fancy, envy):


- I like running on the street!
- I love doing my homework when I am at home.

Na zintuigelijke werkwoorden (see, watch, hear, smell, feel):


- I watched him kayaking trough that river.
- Did you hear him screaming that loud before?

Na de specifieke werkwoorden (avoid, consider, give up, go on, keep, manage, mind, prefer, recommend, start, stop en suggest)


- I prefer relaxing on the beach today.
- I recommend drinking a large glass of water.

Na uitdrukkingen:

- She can't stand dancing with him.
- It makes no sense waiting for that boat.

Na voorzetsels:
- He eats his breakfast before heading out to work.
- My sister loves to think about leaving her house and going on a journey.

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je een zogeheten infinitief (to + hele werkwoord) na de genoemde werkwoorden want, hope, ask, expect, promise, decide, plan en refuse:
