What happens if you call in sick?

• A colleague who is on standby (reserve) is being called. 
• This colleague must be at Schiphol within an hour. 
• Your schedule is being canceled.

Would you call in sick if you had a cold?

1. Yes
2. No, a cold is not sick
3. Only if I can't clear

Group assignment:

Think together whether you are allowed to fly in the cases below:

• pregnancy
• medicine use (cough medicine, sleeping pills, drugs)
• alcohol consumption
• donating blood
• stress
• tropical diseases

• pregnancy: generally not (some airlines up to 12 weeks)
• use of medication: in consultation with the airline doctor
• alcohol consumption: 10 hours before flight nothing, 24 hours not drunk!
• donate blood: wait 24 hours before flying
• stress: has a bad effect on your functioning 
• tropical diseases: malaria, dengue

How can you avoid becoming ill?

• Make sure you are well-rested,
• eat healthy
• have good physical condition (you sometimes walk 10 km on a flight!),
• protect yourself against diseases,
• keep your vaccinations up to date,
• and use medication wisely.

The briefing

• check
  
• reading of the CAML (Crew Assignment Movement List)
• introduction round
• discuss passengers and service
• flight safety questions
• short pep talk and questions

Check

• passport/Ipad/company ID/vaccination booklet?
• suitcases handed in?
• money collected/credit card taken?
• uniform in order?
• fit to fly?

Reading the CAML

• CAML = Crew Assignment Movement List
• flight number, date, stretch, gate
• time when crew must be on board
• boarding time pax, departure time, flying time, time difference
• configuration (how many seats are in which class?)
• total number of pax booked (how many seats are occupied?) 

Company Ipad:

• data will be uploaded 2 days in advance
• before the briefing you have studied this data
• ‘red notices’ (TUIfly) are last-minute changes
• this way you will have less surprises on board!

What flight safety equipment do you expect to find on board?

Preflight checklist

• on the left, you can see the name of a particular ‘safety equipment’
  
• on the right, you can read exactly what to check.
  
• these materials are always in a fixed place on board.
  
• As a CA, you need to know where they are (by means of a layout). 

• doghouse: kind of drawer, often behind a back row of seats
  .
• coat room: for coats, but often also safety equipment

• hier kun je jassen ophangen, maar ligt ook vaak equipment

• in the front/rear luggage bin is often equipment

• hierin bevindt zich meestal alleen catering equipment

Chapter 1: safety & security checks

• Your most important job as a cabin crew?
• You are responsible for passenger safety!
• Unsafe situation? The crew solves it (where possible)!
• Material (equipment) is available on board for this purpose.
• This equipment will have to be checked for presence and condition before take-off.
